Fourth grade went back in time to San Francisco immediately after the 1906 earthquake. The captain on the Balclutha was in need of a crew when his crew jumped ship to help San Francisco. Both classes embarked on the journey back in time through role-play. Before the trip, students learned sea lingo, knot tying, sea chanteys and how to tell bell time. The classes were then broken into crews to learn their role on the ship. Once on board the crews learned the tasks necessary to run a ship.
Kayleen said, “I never knew how much work it was to run a boat!” The crews work on tasks specific to their crew. The rigging crew learned how to hoist the bosun chair. Bosun crew learned how to find water depth. Several different crews learned how to row a dory. The main skill the students learned is how to work together. “I never knew how much fun but yet hard work it was to pull a fall line” Kalani exclaimed. Nathan proudly stated, “I now know how to mouse a hook”.
