In 1954 the Archdiocese of San Francisco selected Father Richard Power to open a new parish in the Westlake District of Daly City.  Father Power’s first commitment was to build a Catholic elementary school.  It was his premise that the school would unite the families and encourage the growth of a vibrant parish.  Under the educational leadership of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School opened in September 1955.  By opening day in 1960, the school greeted students in all grades, First through Eighth and had sent the first graduating class on to high school.  Fast-forward to 2012, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School serves the surrounding communities in Daly City as a double grade elementary school, Kindergarten to Eighth Grade.  (Sr. Claire’s Preschool is scheduled to open in November 2012.) OLM proudly carries on the deep faith and strong teaching ethic planted by our founding principal, Sister Claire Maher, and her teachers.  Our curriculum today calls teachers to shape each student’s success through academics, co-curricular classes, and extra curricular activities.  All these events are highlighted by an emphasis on Christian Service within the school, the parish, and the community.  Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School draws further strength from the family participation that instills so much life into all our programs honoring our heritage of a strong Home School partnership.

Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School is an active parish member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish. Our students participate in parish life as members of the Student Choir or as Altar Servers.  Sometimes students participate in special liturgies as Lectors, ushers, and performers. Second Graders write letters to parish shut-ins throughout the school year.  The pastor, parochial vicar, resident deacon, and other parish directors visit classes, assist with yard supervision, and lead prayer services.  School Announcements are made at Sunday Masses and published in the Parish Bulletin to keep parishioners posted on particular activities.  Several retired parishioners are regular volunteers on campus.

The academic achievement of our students grows through a vigorous curricular spiral and is validated by strong standardized test scores and successful high school placement for our Eighth Grade Graduates.  Core content areas are complemented by weekly art, music, physical education, and media classes.  Students who experience diverse learning needs are supported by our quality Resource Center.  A Homework Club for students in Grades 5 – 8 is open each day after school.  The new addition to OLM, Sr. Claire’s Preschool, is offering a readiness and discovery program for little learners, ages 3 – 5 years old.  OLM also boasts a safe and exciting Extended Care Program for before and after school needs.

The entire instructional staff at Our Lady of Mercy is a refined group of professionals.  The teachers meet and exceed the state and archdiocesan criteria for teachers.  An enthusiastic support staff complement classroom and schoolwide programs.  Our staff includes a well-qualified Resource Director, Speech/Language Mentor, full-time School counselor, and an eager Extended Care staff.
