It's hard to believe that we have already completed more than half of the school year. Each day, the students of 1A continue to amaze themselves, their parents, and myself in their growth and accomplishments. We are constantly doing research to find out the answers to their challenging inquiries. They repeatedly stimulate each other to learn more.  They are certainly learning and building the skills to become lifelong learners.

In religion we are learning about Jesus' death and resurrection. The first grade classes will lead the school in a very special Holy Thursday prayer service. The students continue to learn and practice being active Christians by serving others willingly, just
 ike Jesus did.

In science, we are learning about the weather. The children have had fun watching and discussing how quickly the weather patterns can change. We have also enjoyed learning about some of the many different weather conditions (e.g., snow, sleet, hail,) as well as different types of storms (hurricanes, tornadoes.)  We will also have the opportunity to speak with a meteorologist and visit the Hiller Aviation Museum to learn more about the importance of weather.

In social science, we are becoming globally aware citizens by learning about maps and geography. Our geography unit includes learning about the continents, oceans, countries, states, and towns. The students are looking forward to drawing their own special map that ncludes themselves. Each student will practice their communication skills through a presentation that will teach us about their family heritage.

In mathematics, the students are learning how to count mixed groups of coins. They practice problem solving, daily, through realistic math word problems and scenarios. Once they have this skill mastered, they will move on to learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour.

Lastly, in reading, we continue to familiarize ourselves with a variety of digraphs, blends and spelling patterns to further improve our decoding and fluency skills. We will continue to spend more time on reading comprehension skills such as sequencing, comprehension and listening for details within a story.
