Science 8
In Physical Science, we have begun the study of Physics. This is the only area of the curriculum where students can doodle (designs), throw and drop things and still receive grades in Science! We begin by studying the motion of objects and those forces that direct and oppose motion. Activities for this Chapter include constructing and interpreting graphs. Next, we will study gravity and Newton’s laws of motion. Activities will include designing and flying paper airplanes, dropping eggs (yikes!), and racing back-pack laden skateboards. We will conclude the motion series with the motion of objects in fluids.
Science 7
In Life Science, we begin a comprehensive study of the Plant Kingdom. During this Unit, we will study the structure and needs of the various kinds of plants in this Kingdom. Activities will explore the growth and development of a variety of plants. We will conduct an on-site field trip during which we will collect samples of indigenous California wildflowers in petri dishes. Back in the classroom we will examine and draw the samples we collected. During the Plants Unit, we will learn to use the different kinds of microscopes we have available in the junor high science program.
Religion 7
The seventh graders have just completed a “Stations of the Cross Booklet” activity. The booklets will be used during prayer in the Meditation Garden on Fridays. In our textbooks, we have completed our study of the “Beatitudes” and the “Our Father” prayer. As an extension activity, students are also making booklets for writing modern applications for living the Beatitudes. Our next Chapter is on the “Holy Eucharist” and the Eucharistic Liturgy. The chapter provides an excellent review of the Liturgy of the Eucharist and provides the foundation for the study and reflection of the events of Holy Week to follow.
