The students in 1st through 5th grades are participating in the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) Program and are reading the picture books that have been nominated. The CYRM program is sponsored by:
- California Association of Teachers of English
- California Library Association
- California Reading Association
- California School Library Association
The purpose of the CYRM Program is to promote recreational reading and to honor favorite books and authors.
In the coming months, the students will also be learning about the Newbery Award and the Caldecott Medal.
The Newbery Award is awarded annually, by the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year.
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually, by the Association for Library Service to Children, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
