7A LITERATURE
We have focused on determining the author’s purpose, use of setting, and using details in readings to support our ideas about them. We have discussed the differences and similarities between fiction and nonfiction. This month, each student is reading a chosen biography. Later this month, we will begin the process of drafting and revising our first book report.
7th GRADE MATH
Our review month has revealed some weakness in basic skills such as manual calculation (especially with negative numbers), distribution, using the order of operations, and evaluating powers. Students are receiving copies of the chapter 1 test to share with parents and plan any needed review.
We have started a unit on fractions and are working with algebraic variables, where multiplication no longer appears as an “x,” or even a dot. Also, we are improving the clarity and completeness of written work, including all steps and “scratch” calculations that lead to final answers.
8th GRADE MATH
The chapter 2 test results were returned this week, including lessons on logical reasoning. All other material so far in the quarter is review and deepening of topics introduced in previous years. Errors on the chapter 1 and 2 tests are indicators of important skills, concepts, and vocabulary to be reviewed and strengthened throughout the year.
GENERAL MATH CLASS SUGGESTIONS
Ms. Louie is usually available to help students individually at lunch recess, and at other times by appointment. Students must take the initiative to ask questions in class, or for a recess appointment for further assistance.
Mathematics is a cumulative subject; success is often based on what you have already learned. So strengthening fundamental skills is a key to improving math performance, regardless of the current topic. Students may find it helpful to practice on interactive math webpages such as these:
