Our Art students are learning about the art of Wyland as well as how important it is to save our oceans. We have been exploring the ninety nine Whaling Walls that he has completed to date. Number sixty and sixty one can be viewed at Pier 39 in San Francisco. The students were very interested in Wyland’s newest project to be completed this summer. He is painting his number one hundred and final Whaling Wall during the 2008 summer Olympics in China. It will be painted on the Great Wall of China and will be three and one half miles long! Wyland has been declared as the official artist of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Beginning this month the students will begin exploring the art of Animation. Our second through seventh graders will be creating thaumatropes which are the earliest form of animation. Our eighth graders are continuing to work on 100 page flip animation books. A number of art contests and exhibits are being offered to OLM’s artists. These include “Growing up Asian in America”, Walkathon “Design a Water Bottle” and the Jr. High Mercy High School San Francisco Art Exhibit. I am very pleased to see our children showing so much enthusiasm and dedication in their art education!
